St. Francis Xavier Cathedral
The St. Francis Xavier Cathedral is the oldest church in Indiana, with records dating to 1749. The present basilica church, built near the site of two earlier Catholic churches, dates from 1826. Its adjacent library houses Bishop Bruté’s personal collection of more than 5,000 books and other documents, including an original papal document that dates from 1319. It is the first library to be established in Indiana.
